Tajiri Farm

Farming assistant

  1. Photo sent: cassava leaf mottled with yellow
  2. 🔬 Diagnosis

    Your cassava looks affected by:
    🦠 Cassava mosaic disease

    A virus spread by whiteflies.

    ⚠️ Urgency: high

Supported by

Putting agricultural expertise within reach of every farmer.

When a crop falls sick, a farmer needs a reliable opinion, in time, in their own language. In many regions there is no agronomist nearby and no suitable information. Tajiri was born in the Comoros in 2023 to fill that gap.

  • Where farmers already are

On WhatsApp: nothing to install, an interface everyone already knows.

  • In their language

Written answers and voice messages, for those who read little or not at all.

  • Built with the field

Tested with farmers in the Comoros, improved every day with their feedback.

Our horizon: a more resilient African agriculture that builds on its local knowledge and its own data.

How it works

No app to install: everything happens in WhatsApp, in three steps.

  1. Cassava leaf mottled with yellow, held in a hand

    1 Photograph the leaf

Message Tajiri, choose your crop and send a sharp photo of the sick leaf.

  2. 2 AI spots the disease

Tajiri analyses the photo, locates the affected area and names the disease or pest, with its urgency level.

  3. 3 Treat with what you have

You get the steps to take, possible products and natural alternatives, in writing and in a voice message.

Anatomy of a diagnosis

Every answer follows the same structure, built for quick action. Here is an example for this cassava leaf.

The affected area is located on the photo, not just named.

“Hello. Your cassava plant is showing clear signs of Cassava Mosaic Disease.”

Likely disease

Cassava mosaic disease

Cassava mosaic begomovirus, EPPO code ACMV00. Viral disease, 96% confidence.

Severe chlorotic mosaic, yellowing, distortion and downward curling of the leaves, typical of cassava mosaic begomovirus. It is spread by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) and by infected cuttings.

Urgency level

  1. Low
  2. Moderate
  3. High
  4. Critical

High: treat as soon as possible.

Other hypothesis, ruled out: cassava green mite damage (20%).

  1. Do right away

    • Uproot and burn or bury severely infected plants immediately to stop the virus from spreading.
    • Inspect the surrounding field for whiteflies under the leaves.
  2. Possible products

    • Insecticide registered against whiteflies

Acetamiprid or imidacloprid, only if whitefly pressure is very high, following the label.

      Follow local regulations

  3. Natural alternatives

    • Neem oil spray

      • 50 ml of neem oil (about 5 tablespoons)
      • 15 litres of water

Mix, then spray under the leaves to deter whiteflies.

    • Soapy water

      • 2 tablespoons of mild liquid soap
      • 10 litres of water

Spray under the leaves to reduce whiteflies.

  4. Prevention

    • Plant only certified, disease-free, resistant cassava cuttings.
    • Remove and destroy volunteer plants showing symptoms early in the season.
    • Never take cuttings from plants that show symptoms or from their neighbours.

Frequently asked questions

Why WhatsApp rather than an app?

Because farmers already have it. There is nothing to install, the interface is familiar, and WhatsApp runs on most phones. A mobile app is in the works to go further, notably offline.

How does a diagnosis work?

Message Tajiri on WhatsApp, choose your language and then your crop, and send a sharp photo of the sick leaf, in daylight and without shadows. Tajiri replies with the likely disease, its urgency level and the steps to take.

Which languages does Tajiri answer in?

Six languages are available on WhatsApp today, and the API handles seventeen. Shikomori is not available yet: if you would like to help us add it, write to us.

See all languages

I find reading difficult. Can I use Tajiri?

Yes. Every diagnosis can come with a voice message that reads the answer aloud, in the language you chose.

How much does it cost?

Nothing during the pilot phase. Pioneer farmers who test Tajiri today keep free, unlimited diagnosis for life.

Which crops are supported?

About thirty, from cassava to tomato and from coffee to mango. If yours is not in the WhatsApp menu, just type its name.

See all crops

Do I need an internet connection?

Yes, to send the photo and receive the answer on WhatsApp. Offline use is part of the mobile app that is in the works.

What do you do with my photos and data?

They are used to produce your diagnosis and to improve the service. We do not share your personal or farm information with third parties without your explicit consent.

I represent a cooperative, an NGO or a company. How can we work together?
